When did the fire occur?
- The fire occurred on Saturday morning October 15th at 1.15, nobody was present at our venue at that time.
- The local fire department was contacted by a resident and present at the scene quickly, where they scaled it up to a large fire and evacuated the upstairs apartments.
- The fire was extinguished at 3.20 after which the upstairs apartments were checked for safety and residents where allowed to return.
Did anyone get injured?
- Thankfully nobody got injured, although one person was checked by ambulance personnel for smoke inhalation on site.
- Although nobody got injured, we do sympathise with our upstairs neighbours who endured a night of fright and insecurity.
What was the source of the fire?
- We know that the fire started in our storage/prep kitchen and dishwashing area.
- The source is currently still under investigation by the local fire department and the involved insurance companies.
- As soon as we know more we will update.
What parts of the cafe are damaged?
- Unfortunately our whole cafe suffered damage due to either direct flames, heat, soot, smoke or water.
- Our insurance has declared the cafe a total loss.
Are you insured?
- We are covered for damaged goods and inventory but not for ‘company damage’ such as loss of income, cover for running costs etc.
- We are currently filing damage claims in cooperation with other involved parties. For now we are unsure as to the extent of our cover.
What will happen now?
- We are currently waiting until all involved parties have visited the venue and assessed the damage in order to file reports.
- The location will then be released and a plan will be made for a cleaning operation, a professional company will be tasked with this.
- First, all the structural aspects of the building will be fully restored, after which we are responsible for the interior of the building.
- In the mean time we are setting up a salvage operation of our own, to try and save some of our furniture and goods. More information to follow.
(When) Will you reopen?
- We will do everything we can to reopen BLUEY’S as soon as we can.
- Initial estimates predict that it will take between 4-6 months to clean, rebuild and refurbish our cafe and reopen for the public, but we hope to do this as soon as possible.
